GWU Nursing Leads in Early Immersive Technology Adoption

Nursing Program Continues To Pioneer Clinical Training Through Role Play and 360 Video

George Washington University (GWU) is showing significant growth in pioneering and adopting immersive technology for medical education. While the GWU School of Nursing has been utilizing professional role players as standardized patients (SPs) over the last five years for its graduate nursing programs, GWU is now working with AccessVR to expand training for undergraduate nursing programs.

Additionally, GWU is one of the first universities to build a 360 video training catalog for nursing education. It is currently partnering with AccessVR to create 360 videos that tackle simulations in everything from patient transfer and medication administration to teaching nursing students to speak up when they find a problem.

360 video places nursing students in interactive and immersive clinical experiences that promote clinical reasoning and critical thinking in a safe, scenario-driven experience.

Immersion in a 360 video creates an emotional attachment to what is happening in the room, which creates long-term memories and enhances student learning. We hope these 360 videos will role model what should be done and empower our nursing students to do what is needed for safe patient care.
