Highlighting Inclusivity: Filming Patient Interaction Scenarios at GW Nursing
Last weekend, AccessVR had the privilege of working with Community Options to create groundbreaking immersive content at George Washington University’s School of Nursing. This project is part of an ongoing effort to enhance healthcare training by promoting proper interactions with patients who have disabilities.
The Community Options and AccessVR teams at George Washington’s School of Nursing.
Capturing Realistic Scenarios
The content we filmed centered around two key objectives:
Proper and Improper Interactions with Disabled Patients: These scenarios were designed to help healthcare professionals recognize and address behaviors that could either support or hinder effective communication and care for patients with disabilities.
Didactic Learning for Physicians: We created an educational module focused on guiding physicians in understanding the unique needs and perspectives of their disabled patients. By emphasizing empathy, communication, and adaptability, these modules aim to foster stronger patient-physician relationships.
Dr. Bryan Kornreich, M.D., played the role of the physician in these scenarios, bringing his expertise and authenticity to the training modules. His participation added an invaluable level of realism to the content.
The Power of Immersive Learning
At AccessVR, we believe that immersive learning creates impactful, lasting change. By placing healthcare providers in realistic scenarios through VR, they gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by patients with disabilities. These experiences are designed not only to build skills but also to cultivate empathy, ensuring better care outcomes in real-world settings.
Why This Matters
Training modules like these address critical gaps in traditional medical education. Patients with disabilities often report feeling misunderstood or overlooked in healthcare settings. By providing healthcare professionals with immersive tools to practice meaningful, respectful interactions, we’re paving the way for a more inclusive healthcare system.
A Collaborative Effort
Our partnership with Community Options underscores the value of collaboration. Their insight into the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities ensures authenticity and relevance in the scenarios we create. The use of George Washington University’s School of Nursing space provided the perfect setting to bring these modules to life.
Looking Ahead
We’re excited to see how this content will be implemented and the impact it will have on healthcare professionals and their patients. With tools like these, the future of healthcare training is one that prioritizes inclusion, empathy, and excellence.
Stay tuned as we continue to expand our efforts in immersive learning for healthcare, public safety, and beyond.
